You’ve been hearing this new term “blog” in the news, whispers from friends, and now the final straw – your kids! You figured it’s time to find out what the big deal is, and if you’re missing something.
Well … if you’re a business owner, blogs and blogging, and everything that goes with it will quickly become a VERY powerful compliment to all your other online and offline business growth efforts. And that’s the purpose of this site – to educate and coach you on the advanced uses of blogging, and the advantages to you.
But if you’re just getting started, you may be curious what a blog actually is.
“Blog” is simply short for a weblog. And the plain-jane definition of a blog is:
A web application that contains posts, usually presented in reverse chronological order. The term “blog” came into common use as a way of avoiding confusion with the term server log.
Typical blogs run from the gamut from individual personal diaries, to arms of political campaigns, marketing programs, and businesses. Authorship can range from one regular author, to blogs maintained by large communities of writers.
Many weblogs enable visitors to leave public comments, which can lead to a community of readers centered around the blog; others are non-interactive. The entire online world of blogs or blog-related websites is usually called the blogosphere.
The format of blogs varies, from simple bullet lists of hyperlinks, to article summaries with user-provided comments and ratings. Each and every blog entry is almost always date and time-stamped, with the newest post at the top of the page.
Because links are so important to weblogs, most blogs have a way of archiving older entries and generating a static address for individual entries; this static link is referred to as a permalink. The latest headlines, with hyperlinks and summaries, are offered in weblogs in the RSS or Atom XML-format, to be read with a feed reader.
So that’s what a “blog” is. But what does blogging mean to you as a business owner? That’s the more important question that we’ll be continuosly expanding on in the Advanced Business Blogging columns.
