Podcasting 101

Marketing with New Media is more than business blogging. Much more! But what’s a busy business person like you supposed to do if you aren’t ready to start Podcasting. Or what if you just don’t have the time to create Podcasts as a New Media marketing channel. Well, there are ways for you to stop missing out on exposure to tens of millions of people.

Have you seen pictures of the Parthenon in Greece? Built 400 years before Christ, it still stands today. Have you ever thought how that’s possible? How a structure can stand for over 2400 years? It’s a testament to the wise combination of engineering, materials, and strategy.

Like the Parthenon, your New Media Marketing strategy has major and minor pillars. (or it should! :) )

Four New Media Marketing Pillars

The four main pillars are; blogs, Podcasts, social networks, and online video. And each of these has numerous supporting pillars as well.

The point is, if you fell for the hype that you can throw up a blog for your business and you’re going to gather a Tribe of raving fans who are hungry for your products or services — you probably already realize that you’re in for major disappointment.

When you create a New Media Marketing strategy using multiple pillars you’ve got stability. And you’ve got multiple channels to gather a Tribe on your front lawn.

Audio Podcasting — essentially creating your own online radio station — is a main pillar for two reasons.

The practical; people don’t want to sit in front of their computer all day.

The psychological; a large percentage of people prefer to listen instead of reading or watching. Fail to provide them the channel they prefer and you’ll fail to keep them around.

Podcasting made easy

Now, if you want to succeed in maximizing the reach of your message without creating a persona and shtick for your Podcast — you can auto-Podcast. It’s simple and completely painless.

All you need is (more…)

If your business blog is still 100% written word you’re missing out on an entirely new level of interaction with your target audience. Business podcasts and video are an outstanding way to deepen your relationship with prospects and clients.

If you’re already using podcasts to maximize your marketing inside and outside your business blog — then congratulations. You’re probably a leader in your niche already.

As you gain more experience with podcast production though, you’ll probably get to the point where you want to add music to your show without violating copyright laws. Until just recently good music for jazzing up your business podcasts has been hard to come by.

Now there are some great resources available to you for what’s called “royalty free music.” (That’s music you can freely use in your podcasts and other audio productions.) Here are what we consider the top three sources:

Remember that your business blog is simply a conduit. You can communicate with the written word, images, audio (business podcasts), and video (v-blogging.) Get creative and imagine all the multi-dimensional ways you can maximize your marketing using your business blog as the basis.

Enjoy!

If you’re a small business owner looking for music you can use to make your free business podcast sound more professional, this is a business blogging resource you’ll love! New tech Podcaster from Philly, Mike, from the Mike Tech Show had a really kewl song on his new podcast on tech where he shares great tons of free resources for podcasting.

The song was called “goodbye beautiful day“, and I couldn’t help but play it over and over, after listening to several of his podcasts, many of which were live from the Trenton Computer Festival but more importantly, he replied back to my comment on his blog to share where he downloaded the free podcast song from.

Mike shared the resource he got the free music download where you can get Pod Safe music for your podcast.

Garageband.com is the place where you can listen to songs, review the songs, post your songs, or download songs.

Another free podcast resource he shared from his new podcast is for people who want to find sounds for your podcast to entertain while you educate your podcast listeners (aka - your audience).

Here’s what Mike shared about Pod Safe music:

“Here’s the scoop, if the artist has the song to download, you can play it, copy it, just not make a profit from it. We call that, “POD SAFE”, free from the wrath of the RIAA.”

So enjoy downloading free songs from GarageBand and be sure to adhere to the rules, and you’ll be Edu-Taining in no time!

Also be sure to check out and subscribe to Mike Tech’s new Mike Tech Show which also serves as his blog, where he’ll continue to share technology and computer podcast discussing cool sites, software, tips and tricks that will make you more productive at home and work.

PS: Too funny about the blogging and podcasting world. Mike lives not too far from where I used to live back in New Jersey, but apparently, I had to move 6,000 miles away to Hawaii in order to connect with him. Small world the podcast community and blogosphere has created for all of us! Small world indeed…

Those of you who have Tivo for cable or a digital video recorder for your satellite know how convenient it is to watch what you want, when you want — with no commercials and no interruptions. Podcasting is similar in that it’s time delayed and on demand delivery of audio.

Although the spectrum of content is nowhere near what it is through satellite or cable services, that’s only a temporary situation. Podcasting is another client centric technology that puts the consumer in control.

If you’ve followed the videos and setting up your RSS reader and aggregator (you have taken that first step haven’t you :-) ) — you know how they work. You subscribe to a set of feeds, categorize and sort them, and then can conveniently view the new stuff from all of the feeds together, or each feed separately. And if you’re using FeedDemon, you can even create your own fully customized online newspaper.

Well podcasting works the same way, up with one BIG exception. Instead of reading the new content on a computer screen, you listen to the new content on your MP3 player.

Picture your software as being your audio subscription manager, where any feeds that you subscribe to our regularly check for updates and downloaded to your computer or player directly.

There are a lot of software options available right now, but that’s going to be taking off very quickly as podcasting rapidly gains popularity. It won’t be long until you have some really good software options to choose from.

And I can guarantee you that in the not so distant future, top radio shows like Rush Limbaugh and National Public Radio will be available this way.

As I keep reminding you, this is a point in time that presents a ground-floor opportunity for you to establish yourself as a niche expert (or possibly even a national or international expert :-) ) using business blogging as a major tool.

As with the regular RSS feeds, you first step is to become a consumer. In future upcoming articles I’ll be sharing more details on podcasting and coaching you how to get started. Make sure you’re subscribed to our feed so you don’t miss any updates our coaching articles.
