Remember when you were in high school. You’d make claim and have a friend (or nemesis) answer with “Prove it.” Well that’s the way I felt the other day when I was talking about link building and New Media marketing with a friend who is a successful internet marketing guru.
He was bragging about how cheap he could buy inbound links to boost his page rank. I argued that marketing with New Media, business blogs in particular, was more effective and a better value when it comes to generating a constant flow of targeted traffic AND top search engine rankings. Especially for the average business owner or marketer who doesn’t have tens of thousands of dollars to “pay” for links.
I’ve decided to share part of our conversation because it was really eye-opening, both for him and the coaching group I shared it with yesterday.
Before we get to the “proof” though, let me take a minute and explain why inbound links are so important to your online marketing.
Why inbound links to your site are so valuable?
It’s simple. Get enough one way, targeted, high PR back links and you will rank for any keyword. That’s why marketers spend fortunes buying links. Because links make your site rank, and rankings bring you traffic.
Everyday, millions of dollars are spent on the internet. People buy things, they buy services, memberships, they become leads for a new mortgage, they fill out forms, click ads… Hundreds of millions of dollars worth…
And who is making this money?
The people on top. The sites that are getting found by searchers are taking that money home. The ones that aren’t getting found are getting nothing.
And that is just normal links. Links that don’t carry any type of endorsement or limited niche filtering.
Graduates of our Pushbutton Persuasion™ program have been able to make connections that have a major impact on their traffic, prospect subscriptions, and sales. We’ve shown them how to go way beyond the conventional benefits of Page Rank and search engine optimization.
Once you understand how to connect with and persuade the Tribal leaders who have influence over hundreds, thousands, or tens-of-thousands of passionate followers, you’ll be able to get both passionate fans and links — for free!
Today I’m honored to be a guest author for the ‘Leader’s Perspective’ at Strumpette. Amanda Chapel graciously invited me to write on a topic I’m very passionate about; protecting business people entering the New Media Marketplace. Cults, Conversations, and Control: The Wicked Witches of New Media is the result.
As a life long business owner and business coach I’m compelled to battle against the New Media evangelists who cast spells on business owners. Spells made up of self serving “rules,” “guidelines,” and “manifestos” that cause small businesses to waste time, money, and reputations when trying to market with New Media.
I chose to use this opportunity to expose the top three topics this band of cultish hypocrites use to mislead. Three wicked witches, if you will.
As a member of our Tribe of New Media marketers here at Advanced Business Blogging, you know I never expose deception without a resolution. This guest piece is a warning that is packed with constructive alternatives for marketers, sales professionals, and business people of all stripes. Check it out. Amanda has written an awesome intro for me in Another Sign the Social Media Tide Has Turned.

OK, I admit this video is not New Media marketing in and of itself. But the band Mute Math has rocketed to a level of fame and adoration that usually takes years to build. They’ve done that, and maximized profitability, using New Media like YouTube, blogs, and MySpace to gather a Tirbe of raving fans around themselves.
Besides, this video is just freakin cool! And for New Media Mindfreak Friday, what could be better?! Watch and try to figure out how they shot this video. (The method is NOT what it appears.)
Check out how the band is using New Media to market, promote, and brand themselves at MySpace/mutemath. Do a mindfreak on yourself and try to ID the five key New Media marketing strategies you can use in your business.
BTW — if you do a search in Google for “Mute Math” you’ll find that four oout of the top five spots out of 1.1 million pages are all New Media sources. Hmmmmmm, something to think about.
Since returning from our New Media Marketing speaking tour in Singapore I’ve been buried in three new projects, including managing the final setup of servers for the BLOG interactve 360 software. But Deb has been busy on a few projects of her own, infinitely more fun ones.
More on the projects in the next week, but for now here’s a hilarious video Deb created and posted over at our personal blog BackyardHawaii.com. If you ever thought Hawaii had it too easy on the weather front, you’ll love this Triumph the insult dog video.
BTW — for those of you who just can’t stop thinking about business and making money, this video has been pulling just over 100 views a day with no keyword optimization. Think about it.
OK, let me warn you right off the bat here. If you’re expecting to read some New Media Marketing puff piece parroting what every blog and New Media evangelist out there is saying about Michael Eisner’s new deal with MySpace, to paraphrase Tony Soprano — fogettaboutit! But you will learn how to make the big bucks!
Eisner partnering with MySpace to promote his “Prom Queen” mystery series does not mean he has drunk the New Media koolaide. He’s just a smart businessman. It’s that simple.
If you had over 160 million viewers, of which half are your ideal audience, wouldn’t you make sure you and your brand were seen there? Of course! It’s common sense.
Yet I’ve seen so much crap slung out there by entrepreneurially illiterate morons that I feel like (more…)
There’ a cool new player on the video sharing scene, and their model is a welcome addition to the New Media Marketing mix. Business owners, network marketers, and other sales professionals are getting more and more tools to make their online marketing and list building efforts easier and more profitable too!
Revver is one of those new New Media Marketing tools…
Revver is not as “social network” oriented as YouTube. But they are much more focused on making Marketing with New Media video a snap.
You not only get to host and share your videos for free. You also make money with a unique content relevant ad-matching program. Revver pairs your video with a targeted advertisement, then splits the ad revenue with you 50/50.
And even if you just find and share videos using Revver, you make money too!
Check Revver out as a compliment to YouTube. Both have their benefits, and bottom line — when you’re marketing with New Media to get more customers and cash online, tracking the buzz and the dollars is the only way to determine what’s best for you and your business.

Marketing with New Media tools like business blogs, podcasts, and social networks often means using multimedia files that can get quite large. Sure you could store them all on your own local hard drive. But that would also mean uploading them to a hosting server to use in your online marketing. Well, there are some very reasonable alternatives that can make your life easier.
Here are a couple services that make sharing large files used in your New Media Marketing simple:
MediaMax.com
This company is my favorite as they really kick it up a notch with 25GB free storage and a multitude of files sharing and privacy options. My favorite benefit from MediaMax is their free backup service. With all the New Media Marketing files we have for our business blogs along with audio and video podcasts, this is a HUGE money saver. (We knocked our off-site backup service bill down almost $300/month using MediaMax.)
At $30/month for 1000GB, if all you ever use MediaMax for is off-site backup and storage, it’s well worth the money.
MyFabrik.com
Although it’s focused more on personal users, this service makes file sharing drop dead easy. It will automatically generate links for you to put into your business blog, social networking sites, or even send via email. it’s .49 cents per GB after the first GB free.
Cachefly.com
Hitting it big with a podcast based on your BLOG 360 or other business blog is awesome. But that popularity comes with a price — big bandwidth usage. As your bandwidth usage and download speeds under heavy load become more of a concern (not a bad place to be in at all,) then Cachefly is where you want your audio and video podcast files.
Storage is more costly here, but download speeds even under massive load are blazing fast. This is the choice for hosting your active podcasts when your deliverabilty begins to suffer with more storage focused alternatives.

Developing and maintaining an effective New media Marketing strategy and marketing by blogging for business, using video, social networks, podcasts, etc. — then following societal trends is critical. Doing this on your own observing as a strategic thinker is important. But so is monitoring long-term and short-term research studies (they do a lot of work for you. )
A research study that’s been going on for six years now is “Surveying the Digital Future” from USC Annenberg School. This long-term study uses an absolutely unique data base that completely captures broadband at home, the wireless Internet, on-line media, user-generated content and, now, social networking.
Here are some of the highlights that will be of interest to anyone blogging for business or otherwise marketing with New Media:
- 56.6% of online community members login once per day
- 70.4% of online community members interact with other members when they’re online
- 77.6% of Americans 12 and older go online
- 68.1% use the Internet at home
- More than half of US Internet users are on broadband connections (expect that number to continue to climb rapidly as New Media channels like YouTube continue to grow in popularity.
- 65.8% consider the Internet to be very important or extremely important source of information
One of the most important trends is the fact that for the first time since inception of internet more women are going online than men. That means that just as is true in off-line marketing — influencing women is essential for business success.

Yes it’s true! New Media isn’t just for the under 25 crowd. And ignoring that fact is costing you a lot of free new business. Early in the New Media Revolution, the most efficient way to use New Media to reach a more “mature” audience was by blogging for business. But as this new online world of interactivity and communication matures — so is the demographic mix.
More than half the visitors to MySpace are now 35 or over–up from less than 40 percent last year
A study by comScore Media Metrix released on 10/5/06 shows that more than half the visitors to MySpace are now 35 or over–up from less than 40 percent last year. The comScore research compared audience demographics among top social sites, aiming to dispel the notion that they are the exclusive domain of teens. It’s something we and members of our coaching programs have known (and quietly profiting from) for quite a while.
Members of our coaching programs have been placing their business blog at the center of a complete New Media Marketing system for more than a year now. That system which is part of the new BLOG interactive 360 program, includes a proven matrix of business blogs, podcasts, RSS, social bookmarking, and other tools combined with online persuasion strategies. And now with the comScore and other studies begin released — expanding your New Media Marketing beyond business blogs is something that you need to seriously consider taking action on if you don’t want your competitors to get a leg up on you.
The social network landscape — where’s a business owner to start?
MySpace and Friendster skew older with people 25 and older accounting for roughly 70 percent of their user bases, while (more…)
