Online Apes? Why Newcomers Can Have the Advantage Marketing With New Media
Business owners, online marketers, and sales professionals who stick with their old ways of interruption marketing are the source of their own problem and victims of the system they’ve blindly beholden to. They’re “stuck on stupid“… and happy being there.
Some blogging evangelists and many self-anointed New Media saints have developed the same mindset with astonishing speed. Already stuck in their ways after just a few years of the New Media Marketplace coming into existence, they dole out (and rigidly adhere to) “rules” and “commandments,” many of which hurt and confuse business people.
I think it’s safe to say that these “bureaucrats” on both extremes of the marketing scale are a large part of the problem in newcomers developing effective strategies for marketing online. And it all has to do with being stuck in a singular mindset.
Here’s a good story based on behavioral experiment to illustrate this point…
Years ago there was a purported research study on “group think” done with apes. In the study, the researchers started with a cage containing five apes.
In the cage, they hung a banana on a string and put stairs under it. Before long, an ape went to the stairs towards the banana, but as soon as he touched the stairs, all of the apes were sprayed with cold water.
After a while, another ape made an attempt with the same result – all the apes were sprayed with cold water. This is done a dozen or so times and then the water is turned off, and the apes are left alone. From then on, whenever another ape tries to climb the stairs, the other apes try to prevent it, even though no water sprays them.
After some time, the researchers removed one ape from the cage and replaced it with a new one. The new ape saw the banana and moves towards the stairs. To his horror, all of the other apes attack him. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs, he will be assaulted.
Next, the researchers removed another of the original five apes and replace it with a new one. The newcomer went to the stairs and was attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm.
Now the researchers replace a third original ape with a new one. The new one makes it to the stairs and is attacked as well. Two of the four apes that beat him have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs, or why they are participating in the beating of the newest ape.
Finally, the fourth and fifth original apes are replaced. At this point all of the apes which have been sprayed with cold water have been replaced. Nevertheless, no ape ever again approaches the stairs.
Why not?
“Because that’s the way we do it around here.”
Sound familiar?… Be a smart ape
When it comes to marketing with New Media, think for yourself! Remember, as we lay out in our book Secrets of Online Persuasion, there are really only three things you need to remember to be successful marketing with New Media.
They are the Three P’s: People — Participation – Persuasion.
If you’ve got a good idea for marketing that internet marketing gurus or New Media Evangelists tell you won’t work. Just cross check your idea with the Three P’s.
If it doesn’t violate the Three P’s — or better yet, your idea actively applies one or more — then test your marketing idea, measure your results, and modify your approach till it works.
Be a smart ape, and don’t let others who have been brainwashed in “THE way things are” keep you from YOUR banana!

New Media Divide for Marketers: Social Networks Separate Social Classes… Maybe!
The following cultural divisions have allegedly been drawn in a recent “preliminary draft” of research from Danah Boyd (a PhD student at UC Berkeley, which is reason for skepticism on it’s own.:) ) It’ll be interesting to see what the final report looks like, but the preliminary results are worthy of testing by savvy New Media marketers.
From our experience with 30-plus crowd in the major social networks, MySpace is home to more direct sales/network marketing types while FaceBook tends to be more college grads (but mostly corporate worker bees.) LinkedIn and eCademy are where you’ll find more business owners and high level executives.
Social sites reveal class divide
|
A six-month research project has revealed a sharp division along class lines among the American teenagers flocking to the social network sites.
|
The research suggests those using Facebook come from wealthier homes and are more likely to attend college.
|
By contrast, MySpace users tend to get a job after finishing high school rather than continue their education.
|
The conclusions are based on interviews with many teenage users of the social networking sites by PhD student Danah Boyd from the School of Information Sciences at UC Berkeley.
|
“Social networks are strongly connected to geography, race, and religion; these are also huge factors in lifestyle divisions and thus ‘class’,” she wrote.
|
By contrast, the average MySpace teenager tends to come from families where parents did not go to college, she said.
|
“MySpace has most of the kids who are socially ostracised at school because they are geeks, freaks, or queers,” she said.

Dorothy’s Dirty Little Secret About Making Money With New Media Marketing (podcast)
« Read the whole series: 1,2,3 »
“All my WordPress sites are down,” the panicked voice came over the phone. “I was just facilitating an advisory board meeting with Mark Victor Hansen, and nothing was where it was supposed to be!“, he continued.
The call was from my good friend Paulie Sabol. A close confidant of Mark Victor Hansen and Robert Allen. He was red-faced and there was nothing that could be done. It was too late. Like Dorothy dropped in Oz, he felt lost and confused.
This is just one of the many horror stories I’ve heard when business people eagerly jump into the New Media Marketplace.
What if you were to hear things like:
- 40,000 comment spams on one blog (yes, you read that right, forty-thousand,)
- More than 30-hours per month, just to keep up with technological updates
- The utter failure of countless business people to get any results with New Media marketing
You’d probably begin to think that growing your business with run-of-the-mill New Media strategies is no cake-walk. And you’d be right… IF you fell for the fairytales told by interruption marketers and New Media evangelists alike.
Floundering around the New Media marketplace trying this and that, or following the “expert” advice of self-appointed (Socialist) media experts will bring you not only pain, wasted time, and disappointment. It will lead you to the poor house.
Luckily there is a smarter way to win massive amounts of new business marketing with New Media. Getting tons of new traffic, customers, and sales really can be pushbutton easy when you know how to get past all the B.S.
Here in the continuing BLOG i360™ Preview radio series you can listen in as influence master Paulie Sabol, ex-Google AdWords chief Simon Leung, persuasion expert Kenrick Cleveland, and fitness leader, The Fit Bastard, share their mistakes in marketing with New Media… and how they overcame them. You’ll learn things like:
- How to painlessly start over from ground zero after a crushing defeat
- How to avoid costly errors and the loss of marketing dollars
- How to get four-times the sales conversions you could otherwise get with the best online marketing methods (and why that is)
As you listen to every word of this podcast you will become amazed at how easy it will be to grow your business using the same New Media marketing strategies that are revealed.

Update on BLOG interactive360: I’m Really Not A Tease
OK, get this. Deb and I are on Kauai today facilitating at a corporate retreat with executives from all around the Pacific Rim.

I’m sitting at breakfast this morning and I see these two women heading straight for my table, and they’re clearly on “a mission.”
Now since my beautiful wife was not with my guest and I, my mind raced trying to figure out what they could want. As they reached our table, they both sat down, crossed their arms, and said to me; “We’ve got a bone to pick with you.”
OK, so now I’m wondering to myself; “What the heck did I do now?” But when one woman blurted out; “You’re a tease“, my mind quickly jumped to how I’d explain to Deb why these two lovely ladies had taken her seat.
“KAPLOW”, “BLAM”, “WACK”…. I imagined all the comic book-like action clouds showing up over our table.
Well, after relishing what I’m sure was a very shocked look on my face, they started laughing and continued.
You can imagine my relief when they said they wanted to know when BLOG i360 was going to be ready for the public. You see, they were both sales executives with the firm whose retreat we are facilitating at. And these women were eager to get their sales teams using the online TV capability of BLOG i360™ New Media Marketing system, especially its’ “A.V. Action Motivator” to close more accounts.
After LMAO, I explained to them what was going on.
But that got me to thinking. I’ve been so focused on our business development and some extensive New Media Marketing strategies for a few consulting clients that I realized I haven’t updated anyone on what’s going on with BLOG interactive360™.
Well, here it is.
The delay in a full scale release of BLOG i360™ has nothing to do with BLOG i360™ itself. I has to do with problems with the original software we chose to run the membership area. I’m rather frustrated, because after having our programmers spend over 200-hours trying to get the software to do what we wanted for members, we had to ditch it.
Franco and our programming team are hard at work for the last week building a brand new membership site from the ground up. It could be up to another 10-days before it ready, but we felt it was definitely worthwhile in the long run.
The BLOGinteractive360.com site is still live, since we had some VIPs who claimed their Founding 500 beta memberships and we need to keep the site open for them. And we’ve had new sign ups coming in every day even without any marketing, which is a good.
But we’re still holding off on all major marketing, affiliate sales, and our Joint Venture partnerships until the new membership site is up.
You’re welcome to claim your Founding 500 beta membership and lock in your low lifetime membership rate at BLOGinteractive360.com, to make sure you have a spot. Or you can watch for the announcement when the new membership site is up and running.
Make it a great weekend!

New Media Marketing 101: How To Get $13,380 in Inbound Links
Remember when you were in high school. You’d make claim and have a friend (or nemesis) answer with “Prove it.” Well that’s the way I felt the other day when I was talking about link building and New Media marketing with a friend who is a successful internet marketing guru.
He was bragging about how cheap he could buy inbound links to boost his page rank. I argued that marketing with New Media, business blogs in particular, was more effective and a better value when it comes to generating a constant flow of targeted traffic AND top search engine rankings. Especially for the average business owner or marketer who doesn’t have tens of thousands of dollars to “pay” for links.
I’ve decided to share part of our conversation because it was really eye-opening, both for him and the coaching group I shared it with yesterday.
Before we get to the “proof” though, let me take a minute and explain why inbound links are so important to your online marketing.
Why inbound links to your site are so valuable?
It’s simple. Get enough one way, targeted, high PR back links and you will rank for any keyword. That’s why marketers spend fortunes buying links. Because links make your site rank, and rankings bring you traffic.
Everyday, millions of dollars are spent on the internet. People buy things, they buy services, memberships, they become leads for a new mortgage, they fill out forms, click ads… Hundreds of millions of dollars worth…
And who is making this money?
The people on top. The sites that are getting found by searchers are taking that money home. The ones that aren’t getting found are getting nothing.
And that is just normal links. Links that don’t carry any type of endorsement or limited niche filtering.
Graduates of our Pushbutton Persuasion™ program have been able to make connections that have a major impact on their traffic, prospect subscriptions, and sales. We’ve shown them how to go way beyond the conventional benefits of Page Rank and search engine optimization.
Once you understand how to connect with and persuade the Tribal leaders who have influence over hundreds, thousands, or tens-of-thousands of passionate followers, you’ll be able to get both passionate fans and links — for free!
So what are normal links worth?
The fact is, (more…)

Missing One of The Four Pillars of New Media Marketing? Auto-Podcast Your Posts
Marketing with New Media is more than business blogging. Much more! But what’s a busy business person like you supposed to do if you aren’t ready to start Podcasting. Or what if you just don’t have the time to create Podcasts as a New Media marketing channel. Well, there are ways for you to stop missing out on exposure to tens of millions of people.
Have you seen pictures of the Parthenon in Greece? Built 400 years before Christ, it still stands today. Have you ever thought how that’s possible? How a structure can stand for over 2400 years? It’s a testament to the wise combination of engineering, materials, and strategy.
Like the Parthenon, your New Media Marketing strategy has major and minor pillars. (or it should! )
Four New Media Marketing Pillars
The four main pillars are; blogs, Podcasts, social networks, and online video. And each of these has numerous supporting pillars as well.
The point is, if you fell for the hype that you can throw up a blog for your business and you’re going to gather a Tribe of raving fans who are hungry for your products or services — you probably already realize that you’re in for major disappointment.
When you create a New Media Marketing strategy using multiple pillars you’ve got stability. And you’ve got multiple channels to gather a Tribe on your front lawn.
Audio Podcasting — essentially creating your own online radio station — is a main pillar for two reasons.
The practical; people don’t want to sit in front of their computer all day.
The psychological; a large percentage of people prefer to listen instead of reading or watching. Fail to provide them the channel they prefer and you’ll fail to keep them around.
Podcasting made easy
Now, if you want to succeed in maximizing the reach of your message without creating a persona and shtick for your Podcast — you can auto-Podcast. It’s simple and completely painless.
All you need is (more…)
