What’s Your Strategy to Optimize Your Business, Profits, and Publicity?
Allow us to introduce you to our Coach, Stephen Pierce, the Optimizer himself.
Last weekend, after speaking at the TIMME Conference, we wound up extending our travels and booked a round trip ticket to Ann Arbor, Michigan to strategize for an entire weekend 1-on-1 with our Coach, Stephen Pierce to optimize our business and strategize our upcoming book launch for our new book, “Secrets of Online Persuasion“.
Despite the fact that we had all been traveling non-stop, with barely any sleep, our minds continued to be energized with creative ideas to optimize our business. We had a conversation about this uncanny energy we were all experiencing, and credited this ability to think creatively, brainstorm and “out of the box thinking” to his new OptiMINDzation DVD series.
We set some of the wildest goals that weekend, completely confident they’re all achievable and reachable before the end of 2007. There’s a lot more to it, and I’ll cover it in my next post. Feel free to Visit the OptiMINDzation site to learn more.
By far, this was one of the most intense, strategic planning sessions I’ve ever been involved in; and it left us with so much energy that we enjoyed zero jet lag, and hit the ground running when we returned to the RPM Success Offices this week in sunny Hawaii.

(If you’ve ever attended a Stephen Pierce Conference with me at the ultra-cool Thinkubator in Ann Arbor, you’ll know why these are my favorite conference activities, and quite frankly, the main motivation that compelled us to agree to speak at the RPM Summit event next weekend.)
Shhh! Just don’t tell Donna Fox or Paulie who invited us to speak at the RPM Summit after all the buzz we got from our Secrets to Online Persuasion Presentation last weekend. #1 Audience Favorites At The Internet Marketing Main Event
Deb and I just wrapped up a whirlwind 3-day speaking event in Baltimore called The Internet Marketing Main Event where we spoke on New Media marketing. It was a terrific sold out event with over 300 online and off-line business owners and marketers in the audience. Paulie Sabol, Mike Filsaime, and Donna Fox did an awesome job with everything from the food to the clockwork-like precision of the entire event.
We’ve had a terrific time meeting dozens of new friends and partners from around the world, some of whom you’ll be hearing about very soon as we move closer to the launch of our book Secrets Of Online Persuasion.
One of the most exciting things about this weekend’s event was being ranked #1 by the audience out of the dozen speakers. We tied with our good friend and mentor, Stephen Pierce (which is just fine with us. )
We were honored to be ranked above such great speakers as speaking giant John Childers, Dave Lakhani best-selling author of “Persuasion: The Art of Getting What You Want”, and NY Times best-selling author Joel Comm (”The Adsense Code”.)
And we were totally thrilled with the reviews of our upcoming book Secrets Of Online Persuasion, which Ingram and Morgan James publishing had graciously given us pre-release copies of to start building buzz.
What’s even more impressive is that the New Media Marketing and business blogging presentation we gave was the buzz of the entire weekend. Just like the off-line business world, even in the internet marketing world is JUST catching wind of the practicality, ease, and exponential marketing power of blogs and New Media. The first tidal wave of transformation has swept over the marketplace, but the second wave is cresting setting you up for the perfect “ride”.

Nick Carr Shows Why Business Owners Need To Ignore Most Blogging Evangelists
In a profoundly timely fashion, technology expert Nick Carr shows why as a business owner you need to be reading the multi-part article series Blogging For Business: Dispelling Myths and Clearing The Muddy Waters. Blogging purists and blog evangelists are telling themselves lies, then living them out.
Nick points out the painful truth to the hopefuls of blogging fame in his recent article Nick Carr’s “The Great Unread” The truth is painful, but it’s still the truth.
I must commend Nick as he’ll probably take a lot of heat for this from blogging evangelists. But it’s high time that blogging purists understand the harsh reality facing them. Unfortunately many bloggers, including many unwitting business bloggers, will be left outside the castle gates if they ignore capitalist principles and suppress that drive.
Maybe it’s because Deborah and I are business owners, or because we exclusively work with business owners every day, and have the focus of blogging for business (not for readers) — but the points Nick make seem obvious. I mean come on … duh, even if you’re not interested in selling something but would rather have readers — how can you expect to get subscribers if you don’t market? Obvious, yes!
Yet it’s the obvious that can often be the most dangerous. Lies can be lived for a long time before a person comes to the realization that they’ve bought into a lie.
From my vantage point, this is the problem with the blogoshere — bogging evangelists have bought into their own lies. And their still trying to pull others down into their time-sapping pit of lack and unfulfilled desires by laying out a host of unrealistic rules.
The business owners on our subscriber list and even many of our clients are incredibly confused with what advice they read from pro-bloggers and other blogging evangelists. That fact is what has made us decide to take the gloves off and reveal the lies being told in the article series we’re in the middle of — Blogging For Business: Dispelling Myths and Clearing The Muddy Waters.

Business Blogs & Other New Media Tools May Work Fast, But Not As Fast As This V8 Chainsaw
Alright, it’s a stretch! Blogs, podcasts, social networking and such compared to a v8 chainsaw.
But I couldn’t help sharing this video since I’ve been using chainsaws since I was 12. One of the chainsaws I still own is the Stihl saw shown in the comparison footage towards the end of the video. I use it to get my “weekly release” clearing trees on our North Shore Oahu property. it’s really quite invigorating after a rough week in the office. LOL

With Blogging and New Media Kyle MacDonald Turns Red Paper Clip Into a House!
When our good friend Wayne Kelly (host/producer of the hit Wayne and Jayne Morning Show on KBS Canada) told us about his interview with Kyle MacDonald about his red paper clip nearly a year ago, I was pretty impressed with his trades. At the time using only Craigs List and his blog, Kyle had bartered his way from a single red paper clip to a snowmobile with just six trades. His goal — to barter his way up to a house.
Now, within just 15 trades and a little over a year’s worth of blogging and New Media marketing effort — Kyle MacDonald has turned that one red paper clip into a house!
Solely using the power of the internet and New Media Marketplace, Kyle’s unique marketing and bartering got him online and off-line publicity galore. Eventually that publicity got him noticed by Corbin Bernsen (”L.A. Law” and “Major League”) who offered Kyle a speaking role in a movie he’s producing. But instead of jumping at the opportunity, Kyle stayed true to his belief that all trades needed to be fair and provide something of value to the other person. There would be no perceived charity here.
Since he had nothing of relative value to trade Bernsen for at the time, he put the offer on hold and went to work. With research, and by using some online persuasion techniques Kyle discovered that Bernsen collected snow globes. Kyle (through a trade with Alice Cooper) got a very rare snow globe of the band Kiss so he could trade that with Bernsen. Now thanks to the power of online influence and persuasion he was on his way to some serious online and off-line media attention.
With all the buzz, Kyle’s blogging and the New Media marketing frenzy he was creating attracted the attention of the town of Kipling Canada. The city Council is capitalizing on the press, publicity, and online traffic generated by MacDonald’s story for their benefit as we ll as Kyle’s. In a very smart move the town Council voted to buy him a house in Kipling!
A very smart marketing move!
This one investment of about $45,000 US will easily bring half-a-million or more in free advertising and publicity to help boost Kipling notoriety. And that, the town is already planning to use to boost their marketing to get business owners to come back to Kipling. A ten-plus times return for buzz and traffic generation that was all made possible by New Media and online persuasion!
Pretty cool stuff!
The most interesting thing is that the real marketing and promotion power at work in this story is NOT in the technology of the New Media Marketplace. It’s in the in people, participation, and persuasion! Without the ability to build rapport or influence and persuade online, Kyle MacDonald would have never been able to wield the New Media technology to successfully reach his goal.
Technology is only a tool. The power is in people and persuasion.

Book Update: Business Blogging on Hold While We Meet the Publisher’s Deadline
I probably should have posted this notice sooner, but Deb and I have been putting in 16-hour days for the last two weeks getting our revised manuscript to our publisher to meet Ingram’s deadline for September distribution. Obviously updates here at Advanced Business Blogging have been on hold since complete creative focus has had to be given to the book and our NY publisher. For those of you who have been emailing us about what’s going on, I apologize for not letting you guys know at the beginning of this cycle.
We’ll be all wrapped up this week and the final manuscript for Secrets of Online Persuasion, along with the ultimate publication date of the book, will be in the hands of our NY Publisher and Ingram. Advanced Business Blogging should be back up on a regular schedule starting on July 10th.
BTW — we got the final cover from the publisher’s graphic designer last week, so for those of you who emailed us about that, or have been asking on the blog coaching calls — here it is.

Hi ho! Back to work I go! (yeah… I’m a happy little dwarf :D)

Back From New Media and Blog Marketing Speaking Gigs and Meetings in MI and NY
The keynote on marketing with blogs and other New Media went great at last weekend’s Unleash Your Marketing Genius seminar. And we’re really excited about our initial meetings with some top political advisors and campaign managers for consulting on New Media strategies for a key senate race and a gubernatorial campaign.
Just got in late last night from a 9.5 hour flight back from Newark, NJ. I’ll be sharing some of the highlights of the UYMG conference later this week or early next week. On the political front, I’ll know in the next week or so whether I’ll be able to share any details prior to the November elections. If I’m allowed, I’ll give you some insights into the inner workings of two heavy hitting campaigns.
Congrats once again to Bill Knocke who won the contest we had for the $2,500 ticket to attend the UYMG! Way to go Bill!

Business Blogging Interview for “Hawaii Business” Magazine

Yesterday I was interviewed by Hawaii Business magazine for an upcoming feature article in the August edition of the magazine. (Hope someone as cool as The Dog is on the cover that month. :))

In the 45-minute interview Lisa Ro and I discussed:

- why New Media is rapidly transforming our culture (internationally)
- how business owners and marketers can keep up with (and capitalize on) the rapidly changing marketplace
